Using Interior Brick As Part of the Rooms Color Scheme
When looking to make a house not only as low maintenance as possible but also as fire resistance as possible, brick is usually the material of choice. However, it is usually confined to the exterior of the home and the fireplaces. You may however have a number of brick outside the basic fireplace. This may be a few rows on the sides of the fireplace or it can take up most of a wall and create something of a focal point for a room. Outside of that, you may want to expand the brickwork especially if you are planning on remodeling. There are a number of benefits to the use of brick as part of the interior of a room.
The perception of what the brick does for your home may vary. It may bring a warm and rustic quality or it may bring with it a dark and imposing feeling. It is important however to pay attention to the color of the brick. This is because in most cases within a room, the fireplace is going to be the focal point of the room and that means that it is going to be one of the primary considerations when picking colors out for the room. You are going to want to either pull attention away from the fireplace in the face of a commanding or imposing structure or you may want to draw attention to the fireplace and complement the colors within the rest of the room.
The color of the brick is ultimately determined by the clay that is used to create it. The different mineral content of the clays based on where they are from and the fact that they each respond to the firing process differently is what allows brick to range in color from a buff yellow color to the dark red brown that many people associate with brick. Coatings that are sometimes added during the firing process also have an effect on the actual color and texture of the brick as well. If the brick is a hue that is something you are unable to work with, consider painting the brick into a color that is workable.
When you are using brick as part of your decorating scheme in regards to color, the first thing that you are going to do is to find the dominant color within the brick. You will need to treat the brick the same way you would treat the fabric or other materials in a room that you are going to be using to help to determine the contrasting and complementary colors to the dominant thread through color within the room. For example, if you are looking at a pink or salmon color brick you may want to look at softer yellows, the cooler green colors and the antique whites.
Buff or yellow color bricks are going to go well with neutral colors such as grays and browns, cool and warm respectively. You will want to consider subdued colors that will bring out the earthy tones found within the brick. The greater the contrast the more attention you are going to bring to the brick. In order to bring the brick in to your design scheme more thoroughly consider putting touches of the dominant color of the brick into things such as fabrics or accessories in order to tie everything together.
When the natural color of the brick does not work, consider painting it in order to allow it to be used into the design theme more effectively. Paint it to match the trim in order to increase the attention to architectural details. If this creates too much of a focal point consider painting the brick several shades darker while using only the mantel to match the trim. Brick takes a particular method and types of paint to make sure that the paint is handled correctly by the brick and comes out looking the right way in regards to shape and texture.
